How Long After Your Clearance Certificate Does the Debt Review Flag Drop?
By Chris Shumba, Registered Debt Counsellor (NCRDC2403) · Updated 3 October 2026 · 5 min read
Quick answer: Once you qualify, your debt counsellor must issue the clearance certificate within 7 days and file it with the NCR and all credit bureaus within another 7 days. Bureaus must then remove the debt review record. In practice, most people see a clean report within about two to six weeks of their final payment, depending on paid-up letters and processing.
Who this is for: Consumers who have just finished, or are about to finish, debt review.
Key takeaways
Legal deadlines: 7 days to issue the certificate, then 7 days to file it.
- The slowest step is usually getting paid-up letters from creditors, not the certificate itself.
- Check every major bureau, not just one; they update independently.
- Allow about two to three weeks after filing before disputing.
The legal deadlines
Section 71 of the National Credit Act sets two firm deadlines for your debt counsellor:
- Issue the clearance certificate within 7 days of you qualifying.
- File a certified copy with the NCR’s national register and all registered credit bureaus within 7 days of issuing it.
Once a bureau receives the certificate, it must remove the debt re-arrangement record, the default information that informed it, and the records identifying the restructured agreements.
The realistic timeline
The law covers the counsellor’s part. The other steps depend on creditors, the PDA and the bureaus, so here is what to expect in practice:
Step Who Typical time
Final instalment distributed to creditors Payment distribution agency Next monthly distribution cycle
Paid-up letters received for every account Credit providers About 1–3 weeks (can be longer)
Reconciliation of every account Debt counsellor A few days
Form 19 issued Debt counsellor Within 7 days of qualifying (legal deadline)
Certificate filed with NCR and bureaus Debt counsellor Within 7 days of issue (legal deadline)
Status updated on each bureau Credit bureaus Usually days to a few weeks
Total from final payment
Roughly 2–6 weeks
These are typical ranges, not guarantees. A single unpaid premium or missing letter can add weeks. If you are already past the six-week mark, read paid up but still under debt review.
How to speed things up
- Ask for a reconciliation two months before your final payment. Your counsellor can identify stray balances while there is still time to fix them.
- Collect paid-up letters yourself for any account you settled directly, and send them immediately.
- Keep aftercare fees current. Arrears hold up clearance.
- Consider settling the last small balances early with a lump sum. See settling debt review early.
How to check each bureau
Bureaus update independently, so a clean report at one does not mean all are clean. You are entitled to a free credit report from each registered bureau every year. Check the major consumer bureaus, including TransUnion, Experian, XDS and VeriCred, and look for:
- your debt review status (it should no longer show A, C, D3 or D4),
- the restructured accounts showing as paid up or closed, and
- no remaining debt review notice or indicator.
Your status should reflect F1 (cleared with a qualifying home loan remaining) or F2 (all restructured debts settled). See the Form 19 guide for what each means.
What to do if a bureau has not updated
- Wait about two to three weeks after your counsellor confirms filing.
- Ask your counsellor for proof of upload to the Debt Help System.
- Lodge a dispute with the bureau that is behind, attaching the certificate (use Letter B in our paid-up-but-flagged guide).
- If the counsellor never filed it, you may file it with the NCR yourself and lodge a complaint.
A worked example
Ayanda in Durban made her final payment on 3 March.
- 10 March: PDA distributes the final payment.
- 24 March: last paid-up letter arrives.
- 27 March: counsellor issues Form 19 (well within 7 days).
- 31 March: counsellor files it with the NCR and the bureaus.
- 8 April: first bureau shows F2; 15 April: all major bureaus updated.
Total: about six weeks, most of it waiting for creditor letters.
After the flag drops
Your credit report now shows the restructured accounts as settled, without the debt review record. That does not mean every lender will say yes on day one. Read what banks check for a home loan after debt review and follow our 12-month rebuild plan.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take for debt review to be removed after a clearance certificate?
The debt counsellor must file the certificate with the NCR and all credit bureaus within seven days of issuing it, and the bureaus must then remove the record. Most consumers see the update within days to a few weeks of filing.
How long does the whole clearance process take from my final payment?
Typically about two to six weeks. It depends on the PDA’s distribution date, how quickly creditors provide paid-up letters, whether any small balances remain, and how quickly each bureau processes the certificate.
Do all credit bureaus update at the same time?
No. Each bureau updates its own records when it receives and processes the certificate, so one report may be clean before another. Check each major bureau separately.
When can I apply for credit after my clearance certificate?
Once the debt review status has been removed from the bureaus, you can apply. Lenders will still assess affordability and your recent payment history, so it is wise to confirm your reports are clean first.
